Cultural Markers At Lakeshore!
A couple days ago, my whole class and I went out to have a look at the cultural markers that were placed on the Humber courtyard. I’ve always noticed these markers placed around, but never actually had a chance to study them closer. My trip was very interesting because there was this one marker that caught my attention.
The Tuhbenahneequay Marker
This marker had “Tuhbenahneequay” written on it. This caught my attention because I’ve never seen or heard this word before so it peaked my motivation to do some research on it. From doing my research, I’ve learned that Tuhbenahneequay Wasn’t a form of practice (Which I originally thought was) but was actually a Mississauga woman that is remembered and cherished for her strength and connection to her culture. At the Toronto Carrying-Place Trail there are 150 trees named the “Tuhbenahneequay Ancient Grove” To honour her legacy and to remember her for many more years to come.
